Friday After Ash Wednesday
The 40 days of Lent are a parallel to the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the desert.
But why 40 days?
A mother carries her unborn child for 40 weeks, before a new life enters the world. In the Bible the number 40 represents a period of preparation before a “rebirth”. Think back to the Old Testament: Noah and his family watched rain fall for 40 days and 40 nights, Moses spent 40 days on Mount Sinai before bringing down the 10 Commandments, and the Israelites wandered around the desert for 40 years. All of these preceded a deepening in the peoples relationship with God.
And the 40 days Jesus spends in the desert after his baptism set the stage for the greatest advancement in our relationship with God: Christ dying for our sins and his resurrection securing for us a place in the Fathers Kingdom.
